“the narco is glorified, narcoculture grows because we live in a society in which individuals that want to be heroes can’t find a way to actually become one.

with no heroes turning out from education, law or social struggles, ¿the only route? crime. the last crevice where rural or urban heroism is organized”

heriberto yépez, exquisite recipe for preparing a grilled narco (original in spanish)

“The use of territory always becomes a simulacrum, a symbol of behavior, and of a culture which sustains it…”

Gianni Pettena, “From the Revisited Desert to the Invisible City”

la frontera/the border is a historical composite, divided (shared and partaged), like territory itself, between the two countries, between their respective codes and imaginaries. thus, it is necessary to revise conceptual or descriptive elaborations of the concept in both its mexican and american versions, in order to trace origins and source perceptions.

the base notions for la frontera/the border are el norte and the frontier

i didn’t even know tijuana was under siege yesterday, during a major shoot-out between police and alleged narcos and kidnappers. 6 people held in ransom were killed before they could be liberated, and one of the badguys hiding in the safehouse was also shot and killed.  “la tijuana que se nos viene” writes rafa saavedra, the tijuana to come. it’s more than that. the country is falling apart, little by little. the cities are sinking. the institutional leftovers are burning out. the fat moneyed pricks will be worried soon. again, chandler got it wrong. today tijuana, tomorrow mexico. we’re not in for a joyride.
